SAT & ACT Tutor

Welcome

Han Duhee

Hi, I'm Han! I am an experienced SAT and ACT tutor who helps students across all grade levels build confidence, sharpen strategy, and achieve measurable score improvements. My approach combines clear instruction, guided problem-solving, and a strong focus on the mental side of test-taking.

With an official ACT score of 34/36 from high school and a perfect 36/36 on full-length official ACT practice exams, I bring both real test experience and deep mastery of the material. Having worked with over 30 students across 10 years of tutoring experience, I understand the test from both a student and expert perspective. My students have achieved section score increases of over 200 points on the SAT and 7+ points on the ACT.

About Han

Background & Experience

My Story

My tutoring career began in my senior year of high school, when I started helping peers prepare for the SAT and ACT. What began as informal support quickly grew into a long-term commitment to education that continued throughout my undergraduate years at NYU. During college, I expanded my tutoring beyond test prep to include advanced engineering coursework, eventually serving as a formal Engineering Tutor at NYU from 2019 to 2021.

I graduated from NYU with a B.S. in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, earning Dean's List recognition and a Merit Scholarship. Although I was accepted to Brown University for a Master's in Chemical Engineering, I chose instead to pursue a full-time engineering career in New York City. I continue to work in engineering consulting while tutoring independently, finding particular fulfillment in supporting students outside of my professional engineering work.

In 2021, I worked at an international boarding school, where I supported students academically and in residential life. This experience strengthened my ability to work with students from diverse cultural backgrounds and reinforced the importance of structure, accountability, and student well-being in academic success.

Recently, I joined Private Prep, where I worked with over 30 students on SAT and ACT preparation and helped students achieve significant score improvements, including section gains of 200+ points on the SAT and 7+ points on the ACT. I now offer my tutoring services independently, working with students from middle school through high school seniors.

My teaching philosophy emphasizes both mastery of test content and the mental side of performance. Alongside technical instruction, I focus on executive function skills such as time management, organization, test strategy, confidence-building, and stress regulation—critical components of success on the SAT and ACT.

When I'm not tutoring, I enjoy reading philosophy and literature, listening to jazz, and playing tennis.

What Makes My Approach Different

The SAT and ACT are fundamentally different from tests students encounter in school. They're tests of endurance, retention, and predictable behaviors rather than high-level concepts. It's entirely normal for students of all levels to struggle because these exams require different preparation and different skills.

I customize a unique program for each student based on their strengths and challenges, with a focus not only on content mastery but also on strategy, retention, pacing, metacognition, conscientiousness, and long-term planning. My goal is to help students train to think like the test makers and develop sustainable habits that lead to consistent improvement.

Philosophy

My Teaching Approach

Teaching Philosophy

I believe students learn best when they actively participate in the problem-solving process. Instead of giving answers, I guide students with questions and model effective strategies, allowing them to internalize techniques and build independence.

My sessions emphasize reflection, adaptability, and focus—skills that are especially important for SAT and ACT success. Over time, students gain not only stronger test skills but greater confidence in their ability to learn and perform under pressure.

Core Principles

Active Learning Over Passive Instruction

Rather than lecturing, I engage students in the problem-solving process through guided questioning. This Socratic approach helps students develop their own problem-solving frameworks and builds lasting understanding rather than temporary memorization.

Strategy Before Content

While content knowledge is important, the SAT and ACT are primarily tests of strategy, pacing, and pattern recognition. I help students develop a strategic mindset that allows them to approach questions efficiently and avoid common traps.

Mental Performance Matters

Test anxiety, fatigue, and lack of confidence can significantly impact scores. I incorporate mindfulness techniques, stress management strategies, and motivation coaching to help students perform at their best on test day.

Long-Term Development

Sustainable improvement takes time. I work with students to develop study habits, time management skills, and metacognitive awareness that not only help them on standardized tests but serve them throughout their academic careers.

What Students Can Expect

  • A collaborative learning environment where your input and questions drive the session
  • Clear explanations of not just what the right answer is, but why it's right and how to find it efficiently
  • Regular practice tests with detailed analysis and actionable feedback
  • Homework assignments designed to reinforce concepts and build automaticity
  • Flexible pacing that adapts to your schedule and learning needs
  • Open communication with parents about progress, goals, and next steps
  • A supportive, judgment-free space to make mistakes and learn from them

My Commitment

I am committed to helping each student achieve their full potential on the SAT or ACT. This means meeting students where they are, celebrating their progress, and maintaining high expectations while providing the support needed to reach them.

Test preparation is not just about raising scores—it's about building confidence, developing resilience, and proving to students that with the right approach and consistent effort, they can achieve goals that once seemed out of reach.
